The tides this week were perfect for drain fishing, particularly top water fishing for barra. Anton and James Bouy were here for 3 days, so the plan was hatched to do a day's offshore fishing and 2 days up the creeks chasing barra. Offshore the Spanish mackeral were thick with double and triple hook-ups common. We caught Spanish mackeral on the troll, jigging, and even at one stage casting a baitcaster with a barra lure attached into the middle of the ocean and simply winding back fast!! There were no monster mackeral, with most around the 5 to 7 kilo mark, but still a ton of fun. Up the creeks, the top water fishing provided hours of entertainment, and on some casts the boys would get 3 or four bites per retrieve. There were a few quality fish in the drains with Anton ( father) catching the biggest at 76cm.
This week has brought a real mixed bag, with the creeks providing good sized jacks, fingermarks, king salmon, and barra, to name a few. There has also been some big queenies around, with the larger ones up around the 110cm mark. Most were taken on Halco Rooster poppers.
This week I was joined by Sydney boys Joe and Simon. The creeks once again fired, producing a personal best in the barra department for both of the Sydneysiders. Joe's fish went 90cm and Simon's 92cm. Offshore the fingermark were on the chew with the 74cm thumper [pictured below] taken on a barra lure and baitcaster.
As the fishing guide and operator for Weipa Sports Fishing, I operate guided sports fishing and fly fishing charters in one of North Queensland's, and Australia's, best fishing locations.
This blog records some of the great days spent fishing at Weipa and shows photos of some of the great fish captures.
